The Key Research Behind Inqwire

A New Understanding that Changes Everything

Summary:

We are at the very beginning of a scientific revolution in our understanding of how we make sense of things. The old, outdated, scientific understanding told us that we were biased, unable to know our subconscious, and irrational. This has left us helpless and hopeless in the face of life's complexities. The new scientific understanding has flipped this on its head, revealing how making sense of things is fundamental to us, that we are born with the full capacity to make sense of our lives, and that we are the only ones who can.

The last decade has seen an explosion in the amount and quality of research into the fundamental nature of cognition. These new insights are creating a widespread impact across multiple fields of science. In their wake, an exciting new story is emerging that reveals the elegance, power, and genius of the human mind.

Every field of science evolves from understanding the what to understanding the how. Observable phenomena are first broken down into component parts which are labeled, classified, and understood as individual pieces (the what). Then the work of understanding how these pieces work together (the how) begins. Modern cognitive science is currently undergoing this very evolution.

Systems we traditionally thought of as separate – intelligence, thought, emotion, movement, perception, meaning, wisdom, ethics, and even distress (the what) are not separable and have evolved to work together to help us make sense of and navigate our lives (the how).

Overly simplified theories of the psyche and cognition are being falsified. Entire textbooks are being re-written. And naive attempts to find something broken in the human cognitive system to explain failures to make sense of life are being abandoned.

In the pages to come, we present this new story of cognition and the evidence behind it. It will become clear how making sense of life is a fundamental function of our cognition, and that because of this, we each already possess the intelligence, the expertise, and the capacity to make sense of things on our own. We’ll understand how our fundamental relationship to information, both in how it is represented, and how we engage it, comprises our largest barriers to making sense. And we will reveal common-sense steps that everyone can follow to reduce these barriers and exciting ways technology can help.
